Opposing eTolling on roads in Gauteng, South Africa

I sit with a dilemma!

I was in Mozambique when the Gauteng e-toll raucous started, so I did not give it any serious thought. But I am back in South Africa now.

To get to the office I have to take the high-way (e-tolled) or I have to drive through town (I live on the other side of town). I drove through town for a couple of months, avoiding the toll-roads. Then recently I took the high-way. ... and my fuel consumption dropped dramatically.

I made a couple of calculations and found that the cost of my fuel consumption through town exceeds the cost of peak hour e-tolls. So I started taking the high-way meaning that I will be billed for using it.

... and just this is my dilemma. Thousands of people in Gauteng are apposed to e-tolling and refuse to pay their e-toll bills.

The reasons cited are:

  • the Government implemented the e-toll system without proper consultation (which I believe is true) .
  • the Government did not consider other alternatives (I am sure that they may have given it the slightest considerations but they quickly forgot about the alternatives when they saw the alleged personal benefits of the e-toll system)
  • the cost of the e-tolling system and just using the roads are prohibitive to families and businesses. (I can feel it in my pocket)
  • and there are more reasons at the link OUTA - why-we-oppose-e-tolling.
So do I pay or don't I pay? I mean a log of friends and pastors I know have joined the protest not to pay e-toll. But are they right in doing it?

Making it more difficult for me is that I committed to seek-first-kingdom-of-God. so I decided to look at what the Bible is saying about civil disobedience and unjust governments. And this is opening another can of worms.

So I will study what the Biblical position on government is before I continue with this post.

Every day you are beaten

I came across this post from Bryan Ward this morning: Every day you are beaten :  Beaten by the leaky sink you keep avoiding. Beaten by the applesauce on the wall you keep not scrubbing off. Beaten by the dent in the drywall you keep putting off fixing. You long to conquer mountains, yet every day you are beaten by molehills. All these little problems… they should be so easily solved. Yet they go on defeating you, day after day, until at last you conclude that you are not a capable man: If you are this easily defeated, “surely” you do not have what it takes to win the bigger fights: to become your fittest self, to create a business empire, to create works of art that will outlast you. Hell, you can’t even fix a leaky sink: might as well f*** off and go watch TV. But you’ve misdiagnosed the problem entirely. … One summer day when I went into the workshop, I saw that the plastic gas cans by the tractor were bulging like balloons. I had left the vents closed, and the hea...

The Journey of the Bonsai

At times I place posts from other people, posts that show that Taekwondo is not just about kicking and punching, but Taekwondo is about changing people, about changing lives.  Here is one such post, the life story of Debro van Wyngaard. She wrote this as part of her Black Belt assignment. She is practicing Taekwondo at  TTA Pretoria . Debro is married with two children (a boy of 11 years and a girl of 5 years).  For the past 17 years she has been working as a social worker, working with children in alternative care (specifically children in children’s homes).  She has been doing Taekwondo since 2009 and started to introduce Taekwondo to the children of Jakaranda Children’s home in June 2012.  The Journey of the Bonsai My journey as bonsai started in the wide expanse of rural South Africa, there where time seem to stand still and one's soul is set free. Never in my wildest dreams did I think, that I, a humble fig tree, w...

Would His Word still be enough for his people to come together?” (Radical)"
